Styled Stays: Surfrider Hotel Malibu
On my trip to LA last year, a stay at Surfrider Hotel Malibu was high on the bucket list.
I’ve been saving images of the Surfrider renovation to Pinterest boards since its 2018 completion, and been dreaming of the light, breezy interiors ever since.
Just a forty-five minute cruise down the PCH, you’ll transport from the hustle of West Hollywood to the sleepy shores of Malibu where you can’t miss the iconic Surfrider Hotel sign and vintage seafoam green Land Rover parked out front.
Unlucky in securing a stay (you’ll want to set a reminder the day bookings open up for your dates) I took a tour of the hotel during a day trip before the ultimate lunch-with-a-view at Nobu Malibu.
The former motor inn is small in size with only twenty guest rooms, which means it feels more like an Airbnb than hotel, adding to the laidback vibe of the retreat where options like surfing, yoga or rooftop cocktails are on offer.
The interiors didn’t disappoint — timber and white dominate to accentuate the modern beach shack aesthetic.
Rattan pendant lights and jute rugs are homely touches that signal that if you’re wearing shoes, you’re probably overdressed.
There’s tropical greenery in vases everywhere you turn as well as comfortable linen sofas and armchairs that invite you to grab a book from the mezzanine library shelves and head to the beach across the road.
To keep the spaces looking contemporary, marble has been used as a complementary material and thin black metal legs feature on chairs and coffee tables. Black and white abstract prints and neutral textured canvases are hung in a casual way throughout.
If you like your hotels with a touch of interior inspiration then The Surfrider should be on your stays list, too.
